A 6 page paper comparing and contrasting these two short stories. Emphasizes that Kate Chopin was one of the greatest female writers of the late 1800s. Concentrating on short stories, Chopin used her extraordinary talent to illuminate the societal plight of women during the Victorian era. While Chopin is distinctive in her own right, she looked to the writings of her contemporary, French author Guy de Maupassant, for inspiration and stylistic guidance. Comments on the parallels between theme, characters, and conclusion in these two stories. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

“The Awakening”: An Analysis of Women’s Roles in Chopin’s Novel

The author asserts that while there are many peripheral female characters in “The Awakening” each is treated as though she is invisible both by Chopin and her protagonist “Edna Pontellier”. This paper attempts to provide an understanding of the importance of those women and the reason they were treated as though they were invisible.
