Thomson's discovery of the electron originated when he found that cathode rays were negatively charged particles, a breakthrough he termed corpuscles, noting how their size was approximately one thousand times smaller than hydrogen atoms. The British physicist further claimed that atomic existence was integrally based upon the existence of these corpuscles, a fact he boldly addressed in 1897. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
