Those procedures that do nothing more than summarize large groups of numbers are referred to as descriptive statistics because they are designed to solely describe the characteristics of a large group of numbers. The second category of techniques involves what is known as inferential statistics. In using this technique, the student goes beyond a simple description of the numbers he obtains to more generalized statements.
