“A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner: A Comparison of Two Critical Perspectives
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper comparing the critical perspectives of two analyses of Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”. Renee Curry and Celia Rodriguez both analyzed the components of distance in William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”. Curry however highlighted the importance of the fact that a gender was not assigned to the narrator and this provided a distance for the reader in regards to the perspective presented in the work and instead limited the narrator’s ability to narrate actions and events within the story. Rodriguez acknowledges the presence of the “unnamed” narrator but analyzed the aspect that the characters within the story represented either elements of the present or the past and because of this division, the readers felt further distanced from the characters who lived in the past; especially Emily. The analysis of these two criticisms probably best highlights how Faulkner successfully managed to distance the reader from the mystery which provided an additional sense of curiosity in the reader, and the townspeople, as to the mystery within Emily’s house, by using multiple elements of his narrative and the subtle use of time and perspective. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page review of the stories by Edith Wharton, an author best remembered for her examination of New York society in the 1800s. Much of this work is interwoven by the themes of silence, isolation and illusion. Such is certainly the case with “The House of Mirth” and “Ethan Frome”. The characters in these works find themselves isolated from society as a whole partially because of their own ideologies but also because of circumstances which are beyond their control. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

“Like Letters in Running Water”: A Critical Review of the Curriculum Philosophies of Mary Aswell Doll
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page review of the contentions presented by this author in “Like Letters in Running Water: A Mythopoetics of Curriculum” regarding the curriculum value of fiction. This paper contends that Doll is correct in identifying fiction as a conduit to student understanding of historical circumstances and relationships. Analyzes this contention using primarily the writings of feminist author Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Concludes that while a student might recoil if only given historical detail as it is presented in the common curriculum, when provided these same messages in a fictional format they are able to forge a connection between history and reality. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
